Building Participatory Democracy in the Goddard Community - December 1995 - Page 6

To conclude we must act swiftly before the "social experiment" that is Goddard ceases to exist as a real opportunity and supportive environment to explore community building and participatory democracy. I am confident that as a group we have the cumulative knowledge, interest, and commitment to participatory democracy that is necessary to meet this challenge. But we must make the effort to mobilize ourselves.
Let me know if you: Have any
ideas as to how we can do this
as off-campus students. Can you
think of workshops that could be
offered in regards to participatory
democracy? Do you know of other
creative ways to build community?
Want to help in this process?

Other Important News: Larry Kressley, the at-large board member (since 1993) and strong community ally, resigned from the board of

trustees shortly after the conclusion of the October meeting.

Stirrings Within Goddard Around the Budget:

We are at the halfway point in the budget year and all of the department budget managers (i.e. library, radio, theater etc.) at Goddard were asked to submit three scenarios based on a 9%, 10%, and 11 % cut of their whole budget. This leads to several questions:

  1. Is there a deficit?
  2. What is the cause of the deficit?
  3. Is the cause a decrease in student enrollment?
  4. If there is additional shortfall what is causing it?
  5. If students are leaving early is there a trend and what is its cause? As off-campus students we need to receive information about the financial health of the college.
