Re: Participation in the Goddard Assessment Process 1999
Date: April 28, 1999

You are invited to participate in the new Goddard Assessment Process. Attached are the materials that you will want to review before responding to the attached questions.

The Committee has worked over the past few months to create a process that gives each person an opportunity to think about her or his contribution to the College as well as to provide the president with feedback that will help her understand each person's contribution, and how she can make the best use of it in serving the College.

Included in the packet you are receiving are the following documents for your review: the Mission Statement of the College; a position description of the president's work that incorporates the goals that she has been working on over the past few months; an introductory statement by the Goddard Assessment Committee describing the assessment process -- the history, the thinking, and the conclusions; a very short set of demographic items, and questions for you to respond to in order to participate in the process. Please be sure to respond to all of the questions. We hope you will feel comfortable in answering the questions. Please feel free to leave out any information you think would not serve you well.

Your responses are to be mailed or delivered to the president's office in a sealed envelope by May 19, 1999, addressed to Donna Shavlik, Chair of the Goddard Assessment Committee and member of the Goddard Board of Trustees. If you are on campus, you may pick up a stamped envelope from Jackie Barnett in Office Services. As you will note in the introductory materials, all responses will be read by the president and the chair of the Goddard Assessment Committee. Since presidential assessment is the responsibility of the Board of Trustees, the chair and the president will report to the Board so that they will be informed as they work with the president on her yearly evaluation. This process mirrors the process that students and faculty are familiar with in their own evaluation process as members of the Goddard community.

The Committee has made every effort to include students -- on and off campus, faculty members -- on and off campus, staff, alumni/ae (where possible), and trustees. Please let the president's office know if you think someone has been left out of the process and wishes to be included. Please note that the Committee in conjunction with the alumni/ae representative is working on a questionnaire that will provide alumni/ae, who wish to participate, with an opportunity to share their current perceptions of the College as well as what about their Goddard education has served them well.

The Committee's job was to design a process which would create a way for the community to provide the Board with insight into the work of the president as seen through the work and perspectives of the College community. After the community participates in the process, the chair of the Committee will be on campus to talk with folks about how they think the process worked. By the fall meeting of the Board the committee will make a report on how the process worked, and that report will complete the work of the Goddard Assessment Committee.

Thank you for participating in this process. Best wishes from the committee as you make your own contribution to the future of Goddard College.
