We as a faculty have decided to write to you in recognition of the important contributions Steve Schapiro has made to the college during his tenure as Dean for Academic Affairs. He is an outstanding educator and an effective administrator. We write to you as the Chair of the Board of Trustees in the hope that you will join us in recognizing the excellence of his work. Steve is a truly collaborative leader who has helped the faculty to improve the quality of a Goddard education, to plan and to facilitate growth, to formulate an agenda for the development of the curriculum, and to think through new educational experiments. He calls forth our best thinking, demands a great deal, follows through, and challenges us to think in new ways about the college. Our work has certainly not always been easy; as the college has faced difficult challenges, we have had disagreements and conflicts. Steve manages to work through difficulties respectfully. He has a creative approach to problems and is able to find the common ground between people that yields the unexpected solution. We are deeply chagrined that he finds he cannot continue in the Dean's role. We are equally concerned about the reasons he gives for that decision, which cannot but bring into question the leadership of the college.
