Proposal from Goddard Community
to the Chair of the Board
July, 1996
Dear Jane,
We, the student and alumni community of Goddard, would like to respect your call for collaboration and the beginnings of a new relationship of trust between us and the Goddard Board of Trustees.
Our goals include insuring that we work together to maintain the Goddard mission and fulfill the governance directives for collaborative decision making, free and open access to information, and a commitment to Democratic principles. In order to further this process we request that the following demands be honored:
- The provost should be selected from Goddard community (community defined as any past or present faculty, staff, or student), should be recommended by the community (or community representatives) and board, and should be publicly voted in by the board of trustees.
- The provost reports directly to the board.
- All board meetings happen on the Goddard campus, on weekends, and begin with community input before an agenda is voted on.
- All interested Goddard community members are notified of board meetings with notice of at least one week.
- All board processes are observed by a neutral observer, and/or videotaped, except for personnel matters, and/or at the specific request of the board to representatives of the Goddard community.
- The contract with Miller and Cook be suspended. Peter Burns returns and reports directly to the provost. Manny O'Neill returns and reports directly to the provost.
- The board guarantees that the BA/MA/MFA program will remain intact.
- The board agrees to re-hire those terminated employees who wish to return with no loss to them of seniority or such benefits as may have been adversely effected by their termination. This offer is to be made before any new employees can be hired.
- The board agrees that Goddard will reinstate its committment to hiring gay, lesbian and minority faculty and staff, and reinstate or maintain its women's studies, women's center, queer studies, gay and lesbian center, and multicultural programs.
- By July 16th, a date is agreed upon between you and the community for an emergency meeting of the board, witnessed by a neutral observer and/or videotaping, to consider the issues on this agenda, and to discuss the results and implications of the upcoming investigation.
