GODDARD LAYS OFF 13 EMPLOYEES

PLAINFIELD - Thirteen Goddard College employees have been given
layoff notices in what is described as an effort to streamline
the administration of the financially troubled liberal arts school.
The employees, given eight weeks notice, work in the admissions and
dean's offices.
Officials said more cuts are expected among the faculty and staff,
but no faculty members have been laid off yet.
The school is in contract negotiations with the faculty union, with a new
round of talks set to begin Monday. The current contract expires
March 31.
College officials also are fighting threatened withdrawal of academic
accreditation. The New England Association of Schools and Colleges
announced in January it planned to pull the school's academic rating.
Dr. Richard Bradley, executive director of the association, said review
of Goddard's appeal will begin this week.
