GODDARD FINALLY ENDS YEAR WITH SURPLUS
PLAINFIELD -- For the first time in 11 years, Goddard College, a private,
non-profit institution located in Plainfield, has ended a fiscal year with
a surplus in operating funds.
Gary Welke, Goddard College business manager, said the college had a $28,000
surplus out of a $1.7 million operating budget for fiscal year 1985.
"It is mostly due to a stabilization of enrollment as well as expenditures,"
he said. "We have come a long way from paying off our old debts."
Four years ago, threatened with bankruptcy and a loss of accreditation,
Goddard underwent a dramatic reorganization. laying off over 100 employees
and revising its curriculum.
At that time, Goddard had a short-term debt of $500,000 and a long-term debt
of 3 million, Welke said.
"The short-term debt is almost paid off and the long term debt is under
managed agreements," he said.
He also said recruitment efforts resulted the enrollment of 80 new students
this spring, pushing student numbers over the 250 mark.
