GREENE MAKES RESIGNATION FORMAL

Times Argus Staff - Robert Piasecki

PLAINFIELD - Confirming rumors that have been bean circulating for the past week, Goddard College President Richard E. Greene today formally announced his resignation.

Goddard's board of trustees accepted Greene's resignation that becomes effective on Jan. 1, 1997. The trustees appointed Jane Sanders to serve as the provost of the college.

Sanders, whose appointment is effective immediately, will be responsible for directing Goddard's operations during this transitional period, a prepared statement from the college said. Sanders has been the chairwoman of Goddard's board of trustees.

Dr. Paul Blanc, a Goddard graduate, and a professor of medicine at the University of California in San Francisco will replace Sanders as chairman of the college's board of trustees until an election can be held next month. Blanc has been a member of Goddard's board of trustees.

Greene, 65, denied reports that he was pressured to resign. "I just reached a point where I felt it was time to go. I'm initiating this on my own. I was not asked to leave in any way, shape, or manner," Greene said this morning.

"I felt we established what we wanted to, and resolved some very difficult issues. Once we got through those changes and I felt the school was in very good shape, I decided it was time to move on, he said.

Greene refused to discuss whether he had reached an agreement with Goddard over the buy out of his contract with the college. Greene's five-year contract was scheduled to conclude on July 1, 1999.

He said he announced his resignation at this time to give the trustees ample time to find a sucessor.
