GODDARD COLLEGE PRESIDENTIAL SEARCH:
Goddard Looks for a New Kind of Leadership

Goddard College, a small, progressive, democratic institution in central Vermont, seeks a risk taker committed to participatory democracy as a way to make decisions in an egalitarian manner. Pedagogy at Goddard is also progressive and democratic. Since its inception in the 1930s, Goddard College has been at the forefront of experimentation in higher education. Part of our innovation in teaching places the student at the center of the educational experience, and emphasizes social change and justice.

In the past, presidents at Goddard have resigned, due in part to conflicts with a community committed to complete participation in all important decisions affecting the college. Goddard needs a leader who is sensitive to a politically radical conception of education and of governance. We need someone who is prepared to lead us through a process that questions the necessity of a President in the first place, and can, if necessary, conceptualize alternative governing methods.

Interested applicants should send a cirriculum vitae, names and telephone numbers of five references, and a letter responding to the following questions:

-What does authority mean in the context of collaborative decision making? What kinds of direct experience have you had in such a context?

-How do issues of class, cultural diversity, women's rights, and the struggles against homophobia affect your view of education and governance? What specific successes have you had in these areas?

-How would you lead Goddard in the twenty-first century? What are the important issues facing higher education in the next decade, and how will a progressive educational institution respond to those issues?

-What are the three most important accomplishments in your life?

-What are your experiences with budget, finance, facilities, technology, personnel, fund-raising, development, and business in general?
