California Administrator To Take Post
PLAINFIELD - A California college administrator will become
the new president of Goddard College, officials of the liberal
arts school announced Monday.
Barbara Mossberg will replace Jane Sanders, who has been
acting president since Jan. 1. Sanders took charge after the
previous president, Richard Greene, resigned
under fire. Sanders will remain at Goddard as provost.
Sanders had been a candidate for the job, but expressed pleasure
that the Californian won the position.
"Barbara and I have the same approach to education and organization
management. I'm really looking forward to working together,"
Sanders said.
Mossberg is a special advisor to the president and interim dean of
the School of Arts and Sciences at National University of San
Diego, Calif.
Goddard is negotiating with Mossberg over issues such as pay and
benefits. Sanders declined to offer an estimate of how much Mossberg
will be paid and declined to reveal her own pay.
The college has not established a date when Mossberg will take over,
but college officials said she will start in a matter of weeks.
Mossberg could not be reached for comment Monday afternoon.
Dr. Paul Blanc, chairman of Goddard's trustees, said the process
of selecting Mossberg was "a tremendous validation of Goddard as
a community and Jane Sanders as a leader during a difficult time.
Her work as provost took Goddard from a turbulent and divisive
period one year ago to a time of stability, growth and healthy
transition.
Greene resigned in 1996 after faculty and students rebelled against
his cost-cutting measures. He fired 16
faculty members, but most of those were reinstated after Greene left.
Sanders said Goddard has about 550 students, the largest enrollment
since the 1960s.
Goddard is a private, progressive liberal arts college. Its mission
statement holds that it "prepares students for lives of social change."
