quadrant four is dedicated to the exploration of deeply democratic forms of social organization - ones which use methods, like consensus decision-making, designed to enhance social cohesion and collaboration while simultaneously protecting the autonomy of the individual. We seek, in this journal, to publish materials that will help individuals to appreciate the unique and profound nature of participatory democracy and encourage them to utilize it as a form of organization in their everyday lives - in schools, work-places, and community forums.

Q4 Thesis
 What is the 'Fourth Quadrant'?

Theory

Andrew Dinkelaker - On Reconciling Autonomy and Community

A critique of those on the political left who fall into the trap of seeing community and autonomy as mutually exclusive options and feel that if the former is to be valued the latter must be devalued.

John Fudjack - On Rousseau's 'Social Contract Theory' and Dinkelaker's 'Quadrant-Four Organization'

Comparing two attempts to reconcile the autonomy of the individual with the need for community.

David Thoreau Wieck - On Anarchism

Anarchism is an 'idea that expresses negation of all power, sovereignty, domination, and hierarchical division, and a will to their dissolution. ...It is not essentially conceptual, certainly not rationalistic. At its core, as its matter, as its material source, is feeling -- feelings about relations among human beings, about personal identity and worth, about human being.'

Issues
The Green Party Calls for Electoral Reform

On the need for reforms that would make elections more democratic - including 'preferential voting', 'instant run-offs', and 'none of the above' ballot options.

Grace Gurshuny - Social Ecology in Everyday Life

How do we recognize and strive to change oppressive, heirarchical behavior in our own relationships?

Stephen Tormey - The 'Team' Concept

The concept of team building frequently strikes a responsive chord among workers. But is it the best way to achieve improved quality of working life? And does it engender democracy in the workplace?
